Brake, the road safety charity, has recently shared details from The Automobile Association (AA), which is advocating for the implementation of a Graduated Driver Licence (GDL) in a bid to provide stronger safety measures for newly qualified drivers. The announcement follows new research indicating that 72% of AA members endorse the idea of a graduated licence, which would include enhanced licence limitations such as restrictions on newly qualified drivers from carrying passengers of a similar age for the initial six months after passing their test. Brake is backing the campaign, highlighting that an average of five people per day are killed on UK roads, and 82 are seriously injured, but one in five young drivers crash within a year of passing their test, and 1,500+ young drivers are killed or seriously injured each year.
The campaign forms part of a wider motoring manifesto from the AA, which it has launched ahead of the upcoming local and mayoral elections and pending General Election. The AA’s motoring manifesto covers five key points, including abolishing smart motorways, addressing the pothole crisis and a specific point calling for safer roads:
‘Reducing road deaths through setting clear targets, increased roads policing and addressing the tragedy of new driver deaths through graduated licences such as restricting passengers for six months after passing their test.’
Lucy Straker, campaigns manager at Brake, commended the AA’s campaign for GDL and advocated for government action to protect young drivers, saying:
“Brake has long been calling for this type of licensing to be introduced. We need a system in place that is designed to safeguard young people as they start to drive independently after passing their driving test.
“AA’s research underlines that there is clear public support and appetite for GDL, and for ensuring we prioritise the safety of young drivers on our roads.”
