October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an international campaign raising awareness around early detection and prevention of breast cancer.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is where cancerous cells form in the breast tissue. If they are left unchecked, the cells can spread uncontrollably and potentially form new tumours. While breast cancer most commonly affects women, it can also occur in men. In the UK, breast cancer accounts for 15% of all new cancer cases.
What are the symptoms of breast cancer?
The common signs and symptoms of breast cancer are as follows:
- A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
- A change in size, shape or appearance of the breast
- Unexplained pain in the breast or nipple area
- Discharge or fluid from either of the nipples
- Swelling of all or part of the breast
What is the importance of early detection?
The earlier breast cancer is identified, the more likely it is to be treated successfully. It is therefore vital to perform regular self-examinations and undergo mammograms or ultrasounds when they are available. If you notice any changes in the appearance, size, or feel of your breasts, it is essential to promptly seek medical advice.
Potential Medical Negligence
All too often, there are medical negligence cases due to several of the following factors:
- Dismissal of early symptoms
- Failure to refer for appropriate tests (e.g. mammograms or biopsies)
- Misinterpretation of radiology scans
- Delays in following up on abnormal results
