Urgent Improvements Required: CQC Rates St George’s Hospital Maternity Care Inadequate
August 23, 2023

In a recent press release, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) issued a concerning rating for maternity care at St George’s Hospital following an inspection in March 2023. This inspection, part of the CQC’s national maternity services inspection program, marked the first time maternity services at the hospital were rated as a standalone core service. Unfortunately, the rating was inadequate, particularly in the categories of safety and leadership. The CQC expressed deep concern over the standard of care citing issues with staffing, leadership responsiveness, cleanliness, and timely incident investigations. The overall rating for St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, remains as “requires improvement.”
