From 17 – 23 November, it is Road Safety Week, Brake’s biggest annual campaign especially dedicated to road safety and those whose lives have been irreparably changed.
This year, the road safety charity announced it will be prioritising road victims in its bid to raise awareness of the significantly increasing toll of road accidents. It will also be taking the opportunity to celebrate those who work tirelessly to support families impacted by loss in the wake of a fatal road collision.
More than 1700 People Die in Traffic Accidents Every Year
Over 1700 people die as a result of accidents while driving every year, and sadly another 30,000 are subjected to devastating and life-changing injuries. The numbers are upsetting, and with no reduction in the statistics being noted for over a decade, the work charities like Brake do is now more essential than ever.
Reviewing the figures in their magnitude can often make it easy to forget the everyday individuals behind the numbers. Brake supports not only those directly affected but also the families who have to contend with the increasingly confusing legal rigmaroles that follow a serious road collision.
What is Road Safety Week?
Road Safety Week is a campaign with three primary objectives. Firstly, to inform and educate the general public about the catastrophic effects of road accidents on victims and their families. Secondly, to encourage people to join the charity’s plea for sustainable funding, and to praise the essential work done by those who continue to support the victims.

What to Expect from Road Safety Week 2024
Brake will continue to lead the development of a Charter for road victims. This will include calling on the government to provide sustainable funding for victims of traffic accidents, regardless of whether a crime occurred or not.
The campaign also aims to further educate children and young people on the impact of serious road injuries and the people who dedicate their time to supporting them. This will include bringing more of the community together to honour the memories of those who sadly lost their lives.
An important part of the campaign will also include helping businesses that employ drivers to understand more about the causes of car crashes, and what it is they can do to help prevent future accidents and loss of life resulting from collisions.
Lastly, Brake will be continuing its general cause to assist those whose day-to-day lives have been impacted indelibly by encouraging as many victims as possible to talk about their experiences. It will also be showcasing the work of its National Road Victim Service, which provides both practical and emotional support to countless victims persisting in their respective journeys to heal and move on with their lives.
