The rise of drug drivers in the UK.
There has been a significant increase of drug driving related incidents in the UK.
The most recent statistics published by the Department for Transport show that there was an estimated devastating total of 1,602 road traffic accidents within the UK, which resulted in fatality in 2024. Worryingly, the number of deceased drivers who died with ‘impairment drugs’ present in their system has risen by more than 70% between 2014 and 2023.
It is a known fact that drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, and nitrous oxide and even some prescription drugs can slow down the brain’s processing speed. Driving whilst under the influence of drugs can impair reaction time, judgement, and concentration, all of which are essential for safe driving. When these abilities are compromised, the likelihood of serious, and fatal accidents increases dramatically.
There are a growing number of drug related driving incidents being reported in news articles, and this rise has been described by the media as a “pandemic of drug driving”.
The UK has a zero‑tolerance approach to drug driving for illegal drugs, and drivers can also be prosecuted for driving under the influence of prescription medications if those medicines impair their ability to drive safely. Unfortunately, the number of drug driving incidents continues to rise.
