What is World Sight Day?
World Sight Day will be celebrated on the 9th of October 2025 and is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about visual impairment, blindness and the importance of eye health. At least 2.2 billion people worldwide have a visual impairment or blindness, and nearly half of those cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed.
In the UK, it is recommended to have your eyes tested every two years. You might think that you can ‘see fine’, but it is vital to have regular eye tests to monitor your overall eye health. For as little as £20-30, you could undergo a standard eye test, which can detect unexpected issues. To the extreme, this could include swelling or pressure on the optic nerve, which may help the optician detect a brain tumour before you even start experiencing symptoms.
On World Sight Day, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) invites everyone to join their campaign, #LoveYourEyes, which is advocating for accessible, available, and affordable eye care for everyone, everywhere by 2030. https://www.iapb.world/world_sight_day
Common Causes of Vision Loss
Vision loss can be caused by a wide range of conditions, many of which are treatable if detected early. These include:
- Cataracts – a clouding of the eye’s lens, which is usually treatable with surgery
- Glaucoma – a condition where increased eye pressure damages the optic nerve. This necessitates early diagnosis and ongoing treatment.
- Macular degeneration – progressive damage to the macula affecting an individual’s central vision.
- Diabetic retinopathy – Damage to blood vessels in the retina due to uncontrolled diabetes. This is preventable with regular eye screening and proper control of blood sugar.
Potential Medical Negligence
Whilst not every case of sight loss is avoidable, there are some cases where medical negligence arises:
- Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of an eye condition
- Failure to monitor re-existing eye condition
- Failure to act promptly on abnormal test results
- Delays in referral for ongoing investigations or treatment
- Dismissing early symptoms without proper investigation
- Negligent treatment or eye surgery
Our team of specialist medical (clinical) negligence solicitors understand the complexities involved in handling such cases. We have extensive experience in dealing with ophthalmic claims and can provide you with clear and concise advice on how to proceed.
