According to the Office for National Statistics, in 2021, 113,505 divorces were granted in England and Wales, a 9.6% increase compared to 103,592 in 2020.

Getting a No-Fault Divorce in England
Since the inception of no-fault divorce in the UK, divorce rates have significantly increased. Between April and June 2022, there were 33,234 applications made under the new law, an increase of 22% from the same quarter in 2021.
No-fault divorce revolutionised divorce law, simplifying the process, improving its speed, increasing privacy, reducing animosity and saving money. Applying for a divorce since the law was introduced has meant that one spouse no longer has to place blame on the other to end the marriage. Instead, it must be stated that the relationship has irretrievably broken down. Couples can now apply jointly too.
The law introduced by the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 means that it is no longer possible to contest an application for divorce, and the language used has been simplified:
- ‘Decree Nisi’ is now a ‘Conditional Order’.
- ‘Decree Absolute’ is now a ‘Final Order’.
- ‘Petitioner’ is now the ‘applicant’ – where one person submits the application.
Can I get divorced online?
The introduction of no-fault divorce also means that it is now possible to apply for a divorce online; however, doing so comes with its pitfalls.
