According to a recent article published by The Guardian, a revolutionary drug has been created for the treatment of mesothelioma, a form of cancer that is notoriously difficult to cure and linked to asbestos exposure. The drug, ADI-PEG20, was tested alongside chemotherapy in an international trial conducted by Queen Mary University of London.
The article highlights the findings published in JAMA Oncology which revealed that the drug has the potential to quadruple three-year survival rates, marking the most significant breakthrough in two decades for this aggressive and deadly cancer. The trial involved patients from five countries and demonstrated a significant increase in overall survival and progression-free survival compared to those who received chemotherapy alone.
The drug works by reducing the arginine levels, which is necessary for the growth of tumour cells. This discovery, the result of two decades of research, offers hope to mesothelioma patients and their families, providing a much-needed treatment option for a disease with one of the lowest survival rates.

Asbestos Related Diseases – UK’s Largest Workplace Killer
Despite being banned in the UK since 1999, asbestos still claims the lives of 5000 people every year in England and Wales.
It is estimated that nearly 1,000,000 domestic buildings and around 300,000 non-domestic buildings in the UK still contain asbestos. Asbestos-related diseases, such as mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer, remain the number one cause of death in UK workplaces. The UK has one of the highest mesothelioma rates in the world.
This announcement of this breakthrough treatment will bring much needed hope to those being diagnosed with mesothelioma and to that of their families and loved ones. However, campaigners are still urging governments and employers to do more to protect workers and the wider public from asbestos exposure. You can read some of our previous articles on this topic:
